Culture can yield a significant influence on human behavior, as demonstrated by a mother on a flight from Seoul to San Francisco.
During a recent 10-hour flight from Seoul, South Korea, to San Francisco, USA, a mother displayed a culturally influenced behavior that exemplified a deep respect for the freedom and comfort of others. Recognizing the potential disruption her 4-month-old baby might cause, she took a proactive approach by distributing individual plastic bags to over 200 passengers onboard.
Each bag contained candy, chewing gum, and earplugs, serving as a pre-emptive apology in case her baby were to cry or create any disturbance during the flight. Alongside these thoughtful items, the mother included a heartfelt message introducing her baby, Jan Woo, and explaining the purpose of the care package.
The message read:
“Hello, I am Jan Woo. I am 4 months old and today I’m traveling to America with my mom and grandmother for my aunt’s outfit. I’m a little nervous and scared. This is my first flight in my life. It’s normal for me to cry or cause some disturbance. I’ll try to stay calm, but I can’t promise you. Please use it if my voice gets too loud. Enjoy your trip. Thank you.”
This gesture not only showcases the mother’s consideration for others but also reflects a cultural norm of valuing communal harmony and respecting the freedom of others. Beyond much scientific supporting evidence that culture influences behavior, this act serves as a reminder that cultural influences can manifest in various forms, even in seemingly mundane situations, shaping behavior and fostering a sense of collective well-being.
